Jamko Dining Out

Inspired by the details for The Naked Truth and, most importantly, those promo photos, I’m revisiting some of those times when Eddie and Jamie had a meal at a restaurant. Despite Eddie’s love of food, it isn’t that many; there’s no doubt that we’ve seen them have many more meals at home and Frank’s house than at a restaurant. If nothing else, revisiting these scenes is a reminder that going out for a meal never happens in isolation; it can provide a setting for dealing with their troubles or revealing unspoken tension.

The One That Got Away (07×13)

The disastrous double date: they never made it as far as the meal, but there was a certain awkwardness as Eddie tried to dissuade Caroline from living anywhere near Jamie.

In and Out (07×14)

It’s simple and practical but a great demonstration of how well they know each other. What remains particularly enjoyable is that despite the amount of activity associated with preparing their meals, their conversation is about something completely different.

The Brave (08×12)

Does anything need to be said beyond “between the sheets”? They’re both uncertain about what punishment awaits them at work, but that’s quickly forgotten as they have a bit of flirty fun.

Risk Management (08×19)

It’s a seemingly unusual lunch for Jamie and Eddie at this time, in a light and airy restaurant rather than a bar. This difference in venue might reflect that they’re both on suspension, so this isn’t a break away from their working day. The restaurant provides a pleasant environment for Jamie to try and convince Eddie they need to fight their punishment.

Rectify (09×18)

It’s the fanciest date we’ve seen Jamie and Eddie on as a couple, with them both dressed up. Unfortunately, it’s just a backdrop to their argument.

Common Enemies (09×19)

Dinner with Frank and Lena, we don’t see the meal, but it’s all about settling worries as they gradually gather together. Frank confirms that Jamie and Erin have gotten over their troubles before the focus shifts to the resolution of Lena’s problems at her building, with Eddie visibly relaxing as there’s no immediate friction as she believes Frank and Lena meet for the first time.

Higher Standards (10×07)

Eddie provides her perspective on Jamie’s issue with Frank and does it in a way that doesn’t annoy him. They’re dealing with Jamie’s problem together. Jamie doesn’t verbally respond; instead, he reaches out to clasp Eddie’s hand.

Bones to Pick (10×10)

A slightly awkward conversation that starts as companionable but swiftly becomes tense. The tension arises from Eddie’s insecurities which she’s hiding from Jamie, making her more sensitive to his mistakes.

Family Secrets (10×19)

Revisiting the location used in Bones to Pick, but with a less antagonistic tone to the conversation, as Jamie and Eddie share their worries. Jamie explains his concern for Frank, while Eddie acknowledges the connection and protectiveness she feels for the baby.

Special Mentions

Mistaken Identity (04×10)

This event requires a special mention as we don’t see them at the restaurant; instead, we hear Eddie describing the olive allergy incident. It’s a sign of Eddie’s early protectiveness of Jamie and shows how quickly she learnt so much about him (more than someone who went to college with him and had theoretically been seeing him for several months).

Power Players (05×15)

This meal wasn’t included in the main list as it’s in a bar, but it is another example of a meal disrupted by significant character development. Eddie keeps up a brave front after the incident, but Andy’s arrival triggers an emotional release.

Final Thoughts

There has been such a variety of situations which have involved them being out for dinner; the nature of their conversations has been wildly different in tone. Based on the little we know about The Naked Truth, it’s impossible to guess what their visits to Tracey’s restaurant will reveal. Will Eddie face another betrayal of her trust, will she be vindicated, or will it be more complicated than that? How will Eddie and Jamie handle this; will they be on opposing sides or work together to determine the truth?

  1. 9×18 I was a little confused. Eddie apparently arrived first & was waiting for Jamie. Why? They were living together by then. Even if Jamie was delayed at work could Eddie just wait till he got home so they could arrive together? Plus Jamie never commented on how great she looked in that red dress.

8×12 is my all time favorite. Don’t think Jamie was really joking about the between the sheets.”
Now we know the writers were building up to 8×22.

7×14 showed how well they knew each other. When Jamie was looking around on the counter Eddie knew instantly he was looking for the salt shaker

    1. 9×18 was just weird; the best explanation is that Jamie was late getting away from work and maybe went straight from the precinct to the restaurant. No time for pleasantries as it has to move so quickly into a disagreement.

That unspoken interaction is why I love that scene in 7×14 so much; it’s clear they’re so in tune with each other.
