14×10 Jamko’s Soundtrack

The Heart of a Saturday Night was the most music-laden episode of Blue Bloods to date; this was unexpected for a show that rarely includes more than one song a season. Is this the closest Blue Bloods will ever get to producing a RomCom story? When wedding anniversary plans are cancelled and replaced with spending time at a pest-infested shelter, it must be considered a somewhat farcical situation. Jamie’s surprising introduction to River would also fall into the category of farce. I think it’s safe to say the storyline included elements of romance and comedy. There has always been an element of RomCom to Jamie and Eddie’s relationship as their first meeting fits the definition of a Meet-Cute.

Jamie and Eddie’s storyline includes so many songs; this post contains links to videos with the lyrics and identified when they featured in the episode.

DA Advice & Clinic Check-In

Lust for Life by Iggy Pop was memorably featured in the film Trainspotting, so it makes sense that it was used for the sequence where they prepared to pass the test and arrived at the clinic.

Arrival

Jamie and Eddie’s meeting with the disinterested doctor is interrupted by Caught Up in You by 38 Special. We don’t hear much of the song because of the argument and the abrupt stop, but it’s worth paying attention to the lyrics; it’s about a man who thought he would never fall in love again until he met the woman who taught him how “good it could be”.

Sharing Info

867-5309 Jenny by Tommy TuTone isn’t as noticeable; there’s so much going on in the room with the remote-controlled cars and TV, and there’s nothing to draw our attention to the music from the jukebox. This song is a little strange as it’s someone who claims to be in love with someone they’ve never met, so not particularly romantic, even if it involves love.

Dancing Disaster

The song Jamie selects on the jukebox is You Never Can Tell by Chuck Berry; it’s easy to understand why this was chosen as it’s about a couple getting married and celebrating their anniversary. This song has to be treated with the most significance because it was picked by Jamie; he may be using it as an excuse to film the staff, but it’s the song he wants to dance to with his wife.

Reagan Family Dinner

The episode ends with I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers; the song was described by Charlie Reid as “a devotional thing about how far you’d walk for a woman’s love.” It feels like the purpose of this song is to underscore that this storyline is about the strengths of Jamie and Eddie’s relationship.

  1. I gotta admit I loved the music selections and the way they were edited into the episode. Yes it was different from anything else the show had previously done but I think that was the point!
